Glass vs. insulated steel garage doors
Updated October 29, 2026 · AVS Group
Both are modern, both look great on contemporary homes — but they solve different problems.
Side by side
| Feature | Glass garage door | Steel insulated garage door |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Lots — full-view glass | Only through optional windows |
| Privacy | Choose tinted glass for daytime privacy | High |
| Insulation | Low | High — R-18 |
| Noise | More street noise | Quieter |
| Look | Black aluminum frame, full-view glass | Flush steel in black, white or cedar-look |
Choose glass when
- The garage is a showroom, studio, bar, restaurant opening or pool house.
- You want daylight and an open, modern look.
- Temperature control is not a priority.
Choose insulated steel when
- The garage is attached, heated or cooled, or has living space above.
- You want privacy and a quieter garage.
- You like the modern look but need comfort too — add a top row or side column of windows.
Can I have both?
Yes. Many homes use insulated steel for the main garage and a glass door for a covered patio, workshop or entertaining space. A black glass door next to a Black Sandpaper insulated door is a combination we build often.
